Cosmetic effect and patient satisfaction

08.06.2006
British doctors conducted a study of complications and patient satisfaction with various methods of closing the surgical wound during laparoscopic surgeries. The following conclusions were made: a careful choice of the method of closing the surgical wound is necessary to ensure a decrease in the risk of complications; the possibility of leaving the wound open is recognized as an acceptable alternative, interrupted sutures should be removed one week after surgery; in order to achieve the maximum cosmetic effect, it is necessary to use vertical incisions, and as close as possible to the umbilical ring. 187 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery were examined. Various wound closure techniques were used, then the wound was assessed by a number of parameters after 1, 2 and 6 weeks. The lowest percentage of complications was in the case of leaving the wound open. And maximum patient satisfaction was achieved when incisions were made within the umbilical ring.
