Tiny robots that could revolutionize telesurgery

11.02.2008
Telemedicine can help perform surgeries remotely. Researchers from the University of Nebraska have invented an inexpensive version of the da Vinci surgical robots, which, being easy to operate, can cause a real revolution in the world of telemedicine. These robots can be used even by people without medical training to perform simple surgeries anywhere: even in space or underwater. The new development has already opened new horizons for telesurgery. Scientists tested this system on three astronauts and one surgeon as part of exercises in an underwater environment. This project was called Operations in Extreme Conditions. Surgical operations were performed on a material simulating the properties of the human abdominal cavity. These operations were performed remotely via teleconferencing. Miniature robots successfully performed laparoscopy. This technology can save millions of lives in conditions when the help of a professional surgeon is not available. However, we believe it's too early to say whether surgical procedures can be performed by people without medical training. Human life and health are too important a matter, so it's hardly worth risking such procedures without even the mere presence of medical personnel. Source: mobiledevice.ru
