Lung surgeries will be performed through a pinpoint incision.

Many operations on the bronchi and lungs at the Lviv Phthisiopulmonology Center will be performed without a wide chest incision. A new system, the Olympus video thoracolaparoscopic scope, has been installed there. The equipment will facilitate surgical intervention and reduce the duration of the operation. A laparoscope can also be used for diagnostics. “Previously, to perform a lung biopsy, that is, to take tissue for analysis, it was necessary to perform a complex operation, an incision of 15-20 centimeters,” says pulmonologist surgeon Yuriy Korol, 46. “Now, three pinpoint incisions of 2-3 centimeters will be enough. Instruments and an endoscope, which removes the organ, will be inserted through these incisions. A surgeon’s assistant will control the endoscope. The progress of the operation will be visible on a monitor. “Such operations have been performed worldwide for 30 years,” the doctor continues. — Previously, we operated using a special eyepiece. But the surgeon had to hold the device himself, because one hand was constantly occupied. Now we can operate with both hands. The footage on the monitor can be paused, enlarged, and viewed from a different angle thanks to the endoscope’s flexible head. Yuriy Ivanovich shows the video thoracolaparoscopic scope. It’s still in its packaging. Lviv doctors will begin operating with it after an internship with their Kherson colleagues. They have been working this way for over five years. — Kherson surgeons use this device for operations on eight diseases, — says Yuriy Ivanovich. — We will be able to operate on lung ruptures. Recently, the number of such patients has increased. In four out of five cases, ruptures can be treated through an endoscope. To fully examine the diseased organ, this type of device is exactly what is needed. After a traditional operation, which involves a significant incision into the chest, the patient recovers within three to four weeks. "With a thoraco-colparoscope, the hospital stay is reduced to five days," the doctor adds. "Most importantly, the incidence of various inflammatory complications is reduced. After inserting the endoscope, a small scar remains on the body, whereas after a traditional operation, a large suture is left." Source: gpu-ua.info
