Ultrasonography allows for early diagnosis of cancer

08.08.2007
How to prevent cancer and identify hidden diseases? Doctors from all over the world are puzzled by this question. One of the main solutions remains early diagnosis. Here, endoscopic methods provide the most accurate results. In Yaroslavl, an ultrasound scope appeared last year, but doctors are still learning how to use it correctly. A master class for local specialists was held by renowned Moscow oncologist Stanislav Orlov. Making the invisible visible, confirming or refuting a diagnosis - this is the main task of the ultrasound scope. However, even this modern machine requires a skilled operator - in this case, a doctor. Moscow doctor Stanislav Orlov demonstrated to Yaroslavl residents how to use the device without errors. "The use of video endoscopic systems allows us to identify the invisible, which subsequently becomes life-threatening. Moreover, the determination is at the earliest stages, when the tumor is localized exclusively in the mucous membrane,” noted Stanislav Orlov, a candidate of medical sciences and a research fellow at the Russian State Medical University. “The point of the study is that at the end of a regular endoscope, in addition to a regular video camera, there is a small ultrasound probe, which allows scanning internal organs as effectively as is impossible with other research methods,” said Sergey Kashin, head of the endoscopy department at the Regional Oncology Hospital. Stanislav Orlov is considered a leader in the field of endoscopy among Russian doctors. Even in Europe, no more than six people work with such capabilities. “The diagnoses that Dr. Orlov makes are absolutely fantastic. The tumor on the pancreas is less than 5 millimeters in size,” noted Sergey Kashin. Today, 10 patients were examined by a Moscow oncologist, including residents of Yaroslavl, Uglich, Rybinsk and Danilov. Each of the cases was serious, doctors suspected a pancreatic tumor. Some had already undergone operations - it was not possible to establish an accurate diagnosis before this examination. "The pancreas and liver are organs where the tumor grows so quickly that diagnosis at the earliest stages can prevent the most dire serious consequences," noted Sergey Kashin. In general, endoscopic diagnostics gives accurate results. After it, in 96 percent of cases, the operation is successful and without relapse. According to Dr. Orlov, Yaroslavl doctors have excellent developments in this area. "Both experience and understanding of the problem, most importantly, the treatment results of minimally invasive non-surgical treatment of oncological diseases are impressive. I hope that in the future, it will be entirely possible to organize a training center for other specialists from other fields on the basis of this medical institution. How to correctly diagnose and how to successfully treat,” says Stanislav Orlov. This is not the first time the oncologist has given master classes in Yaroslavl. He has been monitoring the work of the oncology center for seven years. On July 27, another modern device for contact gamma therapy was put into operation at the oncology center. It will make it possible to accurately determine the doses and sites of irradiation and, most importantly, this complex for the treatment of cancer will be the first in Russia.
