Unilateral essential hematuria

A group of scientists Serrano A et al. from Servicio de Urologia, Hospital Universitario, Guadalajara performed a long-term study of 15 patients with unilateral essential hematuria. This study was conducted to determine the cause of hematuria and evaluate the results of endoscopic treatment, modeling a new diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm. The study was published in Arch Esp Urol. 2007 Mar;60(2):155–64. The study retrospectively reviewed the data of 15 patients with unilateral essential hematuria who underwent ureterorenoscopy with a rigid ureterorenoscope (15 cases), flexible ureteropyelocalycoscopy (15 cases), percutaneous nephroscopy (3 cases). Electrical fulguration of renal pelvic and calyceal lesions was performed in 4 patients. Endoscopic treatment was successful in 14 of 15 patients. Only one patient had a recurrence of hematuria. The average follow-up period was 64 months (range, 4–168 months). No patient experienced any significant complications after endoscopic treatment. The cause of essential hematuria was determined only in some patients, but endoscopic treatment was successful in a very high percentage of cases. The researchers concluded that upper urinary tract endoscopy, primarily flexible ureteropyelocalycoscopy, had a significant impact on the diagnosis and treatment of essential unilateral hematuria. As a result of the study, the researchers presented a new diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm based on the use of a flexible endoscopic instrument. Source: www.uroweb.ru
